Sabudana Khichadi & Raita

Yesterday I fasted for a religious holiday. One of the best fasting dishes is sabudana khichadi. Sabudana is also called sago or tapioca. They are these white little beads that you have to soak overnight. Here is how I made our dish.

1 cup sabudana (sago)
1 cup roasted peanuts
1 potato, chopped small
3 green chillies, ground into paste
2 tbsp chopped cilantro
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp sesame seeds
2-3 tbsp oil
1 tsp grated coconut
Juice from 1/2 lemon
Salt
Pinch of sugar

1. Soak sabudana in water overnight. Drain before cooking.
2. Heat oil in pan and add the cumin seeds. When they change color, add the green chilli paste, salt, roasted peanuts, sesame seeds, and chopped potatoes.
3. Cook potatoes with a closed lid for few minutes.
4. After the potatoes are cooked, add the drained sabudana. I added a little bit of sugar and the lemon juice at this point.
5. Fry the sabudana for about 8-10 minutes.
5. Finally, remove from heat and garnish with chopped cilantro and grated coconut.

I serve the sabudana khichadi with cool spicy raita. Whisk a few tbsp of yogurt with a little water or milk to loosen it up. Then add a little bit of red chilli pepper, cumin powder and salt to it and refrigerate until eating time!
