Kitchens of India: Dal Makhani

Tonight I made one of those heat-up-and-ready-to-go meals. Surprisingly, they sell those here. The name of the brand is Kitchens of India Ashirvaad and they make Ready Meals such as Dal Makhani, Navratan Korma, Paw Bhaji, Rajma Masala, Pindi Chana and others. Although they are not completely fresh, meals like this are great for times when you have not soaked lentils beforehand, when you are pressed for time and just when you are flat out LAZY, like today.

The instructions are easy, like 1-2-3:
1.Cut pouch, empty contents into frying pan and heat for 3-5 minutes while stirring. Serve hot; OR
2. Cut pouch, empty contents into microwave dish, heat on high for 1-2 minutes and serve hot; OR
3. Immerse the foil pouch in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Cut open and serve hot.

I followed Method 1 and served the Dal Makhani along with steamed brown jeera rice, onion raita, green moong salad and papadum. This particular Dal Makhani consists of Black Urad Dal cooked in tomato puree, butter and fresh cream. I have also seen the black lentils cooked with red kidney beans (rajma). Of course, it has heavy cream in it, but I'm sure it's not as much as at any restaurant so I'm not beating myself up too much on it.

The best part is that I do not feel the least bit guilty either. This meal serves 3 and only has 156 calories per serving and very high in the protein department. Some days, you just need to take some shortcuts, and it's totally okay.
