It seems so easy to just pick up a quart of Dannon yogurt while out shopping for groceries. My mom used to make yogurt the old fashioned way - at home. I found it much too tedious and quite frankly did not care to go through the trouble of making it at home. I thought it was too hard. Now that I am all grown up, mature and responsible, I realize that the homemade yogurt actually tastes better, is probably much healthier for you and it's really not that hard to make. It's also much cheaper. The yogurt at the grocery store costs you $3.99 a quart!! I think I'll be sticking to this recipe for a very long time.
1 quart of 2% milk (I now use the quart for measure)
1. Bring the milk to a vigorous boil. Be sure to continue running your ladle while the milk boils. Else, some of the milk will get stuck to the bottom of the pot, and you will have yourself a sticky situation when dishwashing.
2. When the milk looks like it is going to overflow, reduce to medium heat. Then bring it back up to a boil on high, then reduce. Repeat three times. Turn off heat.
3. Let the boiled milk cool for about an hour. When it cools down, add 1 ladle of yogurt in the pot. Mix it in by hand or using the hand blender to incorporate the yogurt with the milk.
4. Place the yogurt in the oven, with the oven light on, for half a day, overnight preferably. And, you're done ...
Enjoy your homemade yogurt!
