Homemade Pizza

I've always preferred homemade pizza to any pizza from a pizzeria. The taste of homemade pizza cannot be beat plus you can choose your own toppings without having to pay an arm and a leg. I've tried my hand at a few different ways to make pizza. My mom's pizza requires a stick of butter, all purpose flour and a handful of Bisquick. B found it flaky and was not too big a fan of the fact that I added butter. I think this recipe is one that both B and I like.

2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 cup warm water
1 packet yeast OR 2 tsp
4 tbsp olive oil
handful of cumin seeds, optional

1. Heat some water, just until it is warm. DO NOT BOIL! Add the yeast and sugar and keep it aside.
2. Mix the flours with the salt, cumin seeds and oil. Bind the dough with the foamy yeast water.
3. Cover with damp cloth and place in oven with oven light ON for about an hour.
4. After the hour, knead again. Roll the dough out.
5. Poke holes all over the rolled pizza dough with a fork, except on the crust.
6. Spread pizza sauce and your choice of veggies. I made a mega veggie pizza and added green onions, red onions, red peppers, green peppers, green or red jalapeno, portabello mushrooms, black olives, spinach and cheddar cheese. (Count it! That's 8 toppings. Imagine the price if you dined out!)
7. Let the pizza sit as is for another hour.
8. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Bake pizza in preheated oven for about 15 minutes until brown.

We took our pizza to go and had a picnic at the park. Yummy and leftovers taste great for breakfast the next morning! This recipe makes two pizzas. Enjoy!

*** RECIPE UPDATED ***
I recently made pizza again at home. The changes I made were that I did not heat the water on the stovetop. Instead, I used warm tap water. Secondly, I added Italian seasoning and red chili powder to the dough. I also let the dough rest for 4 hours, rather than the above method. I think both methods work. It's just a matter of how much time you have. I baked one side in the oven in a pizza pan that has holes for 10 minutes. Flipped it over to spread the homemade pizza sauce and toppings and baked it again for the remaining 15 minutes.

Results: Topped with mushrooms, jalapeno and bell peppers, onions, olives, spinach and mixture of cheddar, mozzarella, feta and goat cheeses. The pizza tasted delicious. The one change I would make is to NOT use the sharp cheddar next time. That particular cheese releases a lot of oil. Mozzarella and/or colby jack is probably the best bet. Otherwise, the pizza recipe above are great!
