I have leftover dal, and didn't want to throw it out so I decided to make dhal dhokri instead.
For Dal recipe, see posting "Dharbhatt ..everyone's favorite.
For Dhokli part:
1 cup wheat flour
1 tbsp besan flour
1 tsp asafoetida powder
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp red chili powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp salt
pinch of sugar
handful of chopped cilantro
1. Mix flour with spices and cilantro. Add hot water and knead until dough is almost stiff. Cover and set aside for 30 minutes.
2. Thirty minutes later, roll out the dough (the best part is that they don't have to be round!!)
3. Take a knife and cut out into diamond shapes.
4. Drop the diamonds into the dal a few at a time. Make sure you stir while you drop them in so that they do not stick to each other.
5. Let it come to a boil for about 10 minutes or so.
We are eating our dal dhokli with vegetable raita and papad.
For vegetable raita:
1. Dice cucumber, carrot, onion, tomato and green pepper.
2. Add cumin seeds (or powder or both), red chilli pepper, salt, sugar and chopped cilantro.
3. Mix all of the above into yogurt. Serve chilled.
You can also eat with warm rice. I've eaten it before where the cooked rice was boiled with the dal dhokli. It tasted really good, but only when it is right off the stove.
