I admit it! I have been very lazy for the past few weeks by not cooking anything for breakfast. I just can't seem to get myself back into the routine that I once had. Plus, I ran out of breakfast ideas. I had this recipe sitting on the back burner for some reason. I decided what better time than the present, so I made these Moong Dal Pancakes this morning.
1/2 cup moong dal, soaked overnight
1 tsp green chili paste
1 tsp ginger paste
1 tsp garlic paste
1 small onion, chopped
Salt per taste
Oil for drizzling
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1. Wash and soak the moong dal overnight or for atleast 5 hours.
2. Mix the soaked moong dal with ginger paste, garlic paste, green chili paste, asafoetida powder and salt.
3. Grind the mixture with a few tbsp of water into a fine paste until like pancake consistency.
4. Add the chopped onions and chopped cilantro.
5. Heat up a griddle. Spread about 1 tsp of oil on griddle. Then spread the batter, just like you would with a dosa, spreading in a circular motion from the inside out.
6. Cook on medium heat for about 2 minutes, until the underside is golden brown. Then flip it and cook other side. Drizzle another tsp of oil for other side to cook.
7. Pudas are ready. Serve hot with ketchup, yogurt or chutney.
I added a little too much water to my mixture so the batter ended up being too thin. I had to add some chickpea flour to thicken it up. Once I did that, the texture was fine and I was able to make nice mini pancakes.
By adding less water, the moong dal would have grounded up smaller. Plus, cook a little longer so that you do not taste the rawness of the moong dal. Overall, the taste was great, but the recipe needs a little improvement the next time around.
