Everyone's Favrorite: Dhar Bhatt and Potatosaak
Today I made one of Bhavnesh's favorite dishes- dharbhatt and batakanusak with onion raita.
1 cup tuvar dhal
2" piece of ginger
1 tomato
2 lemons
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp red chilli pepper
2 tbsp sambhar powder
handful of crushed peanuts
1 tsp asafoetida powder
pinch of turmeric powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tsp mustard seeds
1-2 tbsp oil
To make dhal:
1. First soak the dhal for a few hours. Then wash thoroughly, and put in pressure cooker with enough water, tomatoes, and grated ginger and steam for a few whistles. I also added sanchoro, a pinch of turmeric powder and salt.
2. Once the dhal is cooked, mix the dhal with a hand mixer.
3. Heat up oil in pot. Throw in the mustard seeds. Once they fully splutter, add the asafoetida powder, sambhar powder and red chilli powder. Then add in the mixed dhal, coriander powder, salt, sugar, peanuts and lemon juice. Garnish with coconut and cilantro. (I typically add jaggery instead of sugar)
3. Let dhal come to a boil for 7-10 minutes on low heat to let all the spices come together.
To make rice:
1. Wash 1 cup of basmati rice.
2. Then, heat up some ghee or oil in pan. Add in the rice and fry for few minutes. 3. Then add in 2 cups of water and salt and let it come to a boil on med heat.
4. Turn down heat once water is fully absorbed. I noticed the rice tasted good when cooked in the ghee!
To cook the potatoes:
1. Heat up oil in pot. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
2. Then add the turmeric powder and asafoetida powder. Also, add the washed chopped tomatoes and salt. Mix together and close lid, cooking on medium heat.
3. Be sure to open lid and mix potatoes every 3-5 minutes.
4. Once potatoes are fully cooked, add the coriander powder and red chilli powder. Turn off heat and keep lid closed. Finally, garnish with cilantro
To make onion raita:
1. First, chop up 1/2 onion finely.
2. Add some water to 1 cup of yogurt.
3. Add 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 tsp red chilli powder to the yogurt and mix together.
4. Finally, mix in the chopped onions, and let chill in the refrigerator until serving time.
